Nigerian Regions and the Genres They Own

The Nigerian music industry has grown beyond our wildest dreams in recent years, thanks to artistes like Tuface, D’Banj, Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy and many others who have taken our music beyond the borders of Africa to regions like the west and the Caribbean.

Now we have musicians like Beyonce, Jay Z, Drake, Nas, J. Cole and many other popular international artistes either featuring our acts or sampling our sounds, and if there ever was a dream for the Nigerian music industry, then this is it.

However, we can’t neglect the fact that everything started from here and we can’t thank the different regions in Nigeria for blessing us with the prominent artistes that have made the industry great, while also cementing the region as the one that produces the best artistes in a particular genre.

North – Rap/Hip-Hop

There’s no argument that northern Nigeria produces the best rappers. It’s very evident in the fact that Jos has been critically acclaimed “the rap capital of Nigeria,” having produced hot rappers like M.I, Ice Prince, Classiq, Jesse Jagz and Mode 9 (to mention a few, because there are a whole lot of them). There’s a certain poetic side to rappers who come from the North (especially Jos) that we don’t really see from rappers in other regions. The best thing about rappers bred in the north is, they aren’t commercial rappers. They have their fanbase, stick to it and deliver every time.
